At a Glance

Shortens a line or curve by cutting away the piece your cursor is over. As you move the mouse over the drawing, the segment nearest the cursor is highlighted along with a preview of what will remain.

Parameters

No on-screen options panel — it's operated entirely by hovering and clicking, with Shift changing its behavior.

Overview

Shortens a line or curve by cutting away the piece your cursor is over. As you move the mouse over the drawing, the segment nearest the cursor is highlighted along with a preview of what will remain. By default, the tool trims the segment back to the nearest place it crosses another shape — any visible shape can act as a cutting boundary. Holding Shift switches to a free "interactive" mode that trims the piece all the way back to wherever you click, without needing a crossing shape (open-ended lines only).

Using Trim

Move the cursor over the piece of a shape you want to remove (a live preview shows what will be cut), then click to trim it. Hold Shift to trim freely to the cursor position instead.

Standard and Interactive Trimming

Normally, Trim removes the portion under the cursor back to the nearest crossing with another visible shape. The other shape acts as the trim boundary, so it does not need to be selected first.

Hold Shift to use the interactive mode on an open-ended line. In this mode, the line can be trimmed directly back to the clicked location without requiring another shape as a boundary.

A live preview shows which portion will be removed before the click is committed.

Result

The clicked piece of the shape is removed, and the remaining piece becomes the new shape in its place.
